Maple Sugar Trail

We went to Cumming Nature Center today to walk the maple sugar trail. On the trail, the kids get to participate in every step of the maple sugaring process. Here you can see Randall tapping a tree.

Children used to carry the sap from the trees in these buckets to a giant boiling pot. It was a job they didn't mind considering almost all of their sugar came from the maple tree sap when our country was just beginning. The trail ends at the Sugar House. This is where the nature center boils all of the sap that they have collected into maple syrup. Here you can see Randall hanging out over the boiling sap, it smells delicious! It takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of maple syrup. After walking the trail, we go back to the nature center building and eat a huge breakfast of pancakes and fresh maple syrup. YUM!
